Our Schools, Our City, Your Support
Portland will succeed as a city only if our public schools are successful. There's a good reason why so many school advocates are supporting Sam for Mayor.
"Every time we needed help, Sam was there. Every time we needed to raise money for a campaign, he was there. And Sam has worked tirelessly -- often behind the scenes -- to help keep schools at the top of our civic agenda. Sam will be a great Mayor, and he will be an especially great Mayor for our public schools." -Ann Nice, retired teacher & former President--Portland Association of Teachers

It’s no surprise that Sam has made improving our schools a centerpiece of his campaign for Mayor. “A recent study of Portland Public Schools' class of 2004 found that only 57 percent graduated on schedule. ‘We cannot simply leave it up to school boards and superintendents to address this issue on their own,’ Adams said. 'This will be a citywide, all-hands-on-deck priority if I'm elected mayor.’" Campaign announcement (Oregonian, 10/4/2007)
Sam Adams has helped achieve real results on the some of the toughest local education issue we've faced:
- With Portland Mayor Vera Katz, co-founded the Coalition for School Funding Now—“the most effective advocate for schools in the 1997 and 1999 legislatures” (Oregonian, 6/1/2000). The Coalition helped boost K-12 school funding by almost $2 million in two state legislative sessions.
- As a City Commissioner, Co-Chaired the fundraising committee for the successful 26-84 School funding measure in 2006
- Helped create the School Oversight Committee that ensured that school ballot measure revenues were spent in the classroom
- A key negotiator on three local public school funding measures that collectively raised hundreds of millions for local schools
